Rise of 2000s serial and why it is bad
15 September 1959, The first channel was launched; Doordarshan. That channel used to be very famous before 2000s when most people didn't had access to televisions. During the period of doordarshan, a lot of great shows such as Ramayana, Mahabharat, Bunyad, Fauji and many more but a lot of things changed in 1991. In that year, Many other channels started to air such as star. As the popularity increased, More investments were made.
To keep up the popularity, DD (Doordarshan) aired other great shows such as Hajreta, Just Mohabbat, Hip Hip Hooray, Saas, Aarohan, Sea-hawk and more which were directed and written by amazing people. But everything changed when Akta Kapoor started to make serials like kyuni saas bhi kabhi bahoo thi and kahaani ghar ghar ki around 15 years ago.
These shows got popular just because these shows were made according to "sanskari bahu" trope which a lot of Indian families will watch because of reasons* and slowly started to grow in popularity. As it started to grow, Other media channel started to copy them and made similar shows.
Actually, the trope itself is not bad but when stuff like idiotic plots, old harmful beliefs, bad directing, major lack of realism and many many more and un top of that the repetitive, backward and Putting different people but with same views, beliefs, personality and everything in a protagonist.
A fact that every serial starts out with its own story but ends up trapped in "Sanshari bahu" trope; Unrealistic way that character behave, The un-necessary way that the show is prolonged; mis-interpretation of current society.
The reason why I think that the drama industry of India hasn't progressed is because of the audiences themselves. Some shows have tried to air but because of audiences themselves the show could not run and had to go. They are already used to those low quality shows.
*which are
- religious influences
- backwards minds
- 80s to present movies
- unwilling to change mind.
